New Berlin- “Basic Function” (2016, Erste Theke Tontraeger / Super Secret)

Last week I was browsing European releases on Sorry State’s website and stumbled across the New Berlin’s “Basic Function.” Upbeat, cold, with an undeniable punk rock vibe would liven up any (post-) punk or indie rock deejay set.  A timeless record that feels like it crawled from the sewers of the London or Manchester in the ‘80s (but recorded in present day McAllen, Texas). That chilly post-punk feel of something that might have run parallel to Joy Division, but with a nonchalent deadpan spoken vocal deliver and guitar solos of late ‘70s early ‘80s American and UK punk / post-punk come to mind…think The Boys, Wire, or Television Personalities.  Jam “Fanboy” or “Hardcore Punx” and you will be an instant fan. I borrowed a little form the label description but ETT’s brilliant when describing this record. People will ask: who is this?  When was it recorded?  Can’t get it out of my head.
