Will Courtney

Singer/songwriter Will Courtney is set to release his third studio album, ‘Crazy Love’, on September 21 on Super Secret Records. Drawing from a wide range of styles ranging from Elliot Smith’s threadbare confessionals to Roky Erickson’s psychedelic Western twang and Harry Nilsson’s sardonic charm, ‘Crazy Love’ showcases Courtney’s knack for poignant Americana and folk song craft buoyed by unflinching honesty and realism. ‘Crazy Love’ will be available on vinyl, digital, and CD featuring an alternative color scheme.

Employing mostly live drums, guitars, and bass, ‘Crazy Love’ was produced and recorded by Courtney himself at his home studio in Austin. The album features nine original tracks (written or co-written by Courtney) and one measured by afflicting cover of Crazy Horse’s “Look At All The Things”, originally written by Danny Whitten. “I tried to be as honest as I could when writing these songs,” Courtney says. “I think that being honest is a radical thing these days. The reason I always connected so much more with the older country and rock and singer-songwriters was because it felt more real back then.”

Courtney enlisted his backing band The Wild Bunch (Dan Wilcox on lead guitar, Travis Garaffa on drums, and Dave Morgan on bass) and an array of Austin-based musicians to lend a hand, including Mike Molnar (The Bellfuries) on guitar. Santa Fe-based musician, Greg Butera, whose 2014 album was produced by Will, contributed guitar work along with his bandmate, Ryan Little, who rounded out the sound with his steel guitar.

The album opens with the hook-laden anthemic rocker “Too High Now”, an adrenaline rush of a man on a desperate run from himself bounded by big, crunching guitar chords and soaring pedal steel. The high lonesome twang on “Loaded” puts Courtney’s country leanings on full display while the title track is a rollicking shuffle of apparent resigned fate.

With its big synth intro, stark atmospherics and jangling guitar, “Coming On Strong” is a charming change of pace filled with somber reflection. “Finally” holds special meaning as the beautifully penned track was co-written with Courtney’s renowned, multiple GRAMMY Award and Dove Award-winning gospel singer mother, Cynthia Clawson.

Throughout, the album flows as if a chronicle of an emotional journey through love, breakup, drowning the pain, reconciliations, and the eventual redemption of album closer, “Partner In Time”, which is a paean to Will’s wife.

Courtney plans to tour extensively this Summer and Fall. Stay tuned for updates.
