Rob Jacobs and John McCowen thrive on restlessness. Their joint project Wei Zhongle has maintained a rotating cast of musicians through the five albums they have released under that name. Their work—guitar/vocals and amplified clarinet, respectively—have been the only constants. That free-flowing, open door policy has meant that, much to the delight of avant rock fans, their music constantly surprises. 2015’s Nu Trance was smashed together motorik rhythms with the swirl of North African melodics where Raised High/Brought Low from 2013 dabbled in jazz textures and an almost country-like rambling.

The latest pleasant shock to the system from this Chicago-based outfit is the new album The Operators, out on January 26th via Self Sabotage Records. This latest full-length finds Jacobs, McCowen and their new bandmates Pat Keen and Phil Sudderberg getting almost accessible. At least as accessible as, say, Fear Of Music’s more challenging moments got. The record is bouncy and bubbly yet cut through with hard angles and sharp points. Give a listen to this slithery beast of a song from the new LP and take care not to let it wrap around your cerebral cortex too tightly.

The self-titled debut album from dark folk balladeer Little Mazarn dropped on Friday, Dec. 15th! Taking the name from a river in Arkansas, sole constant member and creative force Lindsey Verrill began playing banjo in earnest in 2014 and writing songs about “pretty things, boring things, and the garbage that is humanity.” Much of these early feelings and experimentations have come to form the basis of Verrill’s work as Little Mazarn. All praise Chicago’s Wei Zhongle, experimental pop polymaths who have been developing and disfiguring their sound the turn of the decade. Set to release their latest album, The Operators, on February 16th via Self Sabotage Records, the quartet’s shape-shifting grooves continue to evolve and expand, forever pushing forward into their own unique landscape of psychedelic exploration and brain-stem dripped art pop. It’s becoming increasingly hard to stand out when seemingly everyone is embracing their weirder side, but there’s only one Wei Zhongle.

“On Its Way,” the record’s first single is a warped and bubbling slice of progressive experimentation, a song that captures a pop sensibility in structure, and stays firmly rooted in the avant-garde on all other fronts. Distorted clarinet and heavily effected guitar create a twitchy melody, zigging and zagging into hypnotic depths and dropped out visions. The band balance rattling static and detached funk rhythms with seesawing melodies and infectious vocals, distorted but welcoming; like a friendly alien come to make new earthling friends. Skronks, blips, and electronic inconsistencies add character to each verse, coloring with rapid textures and vividly sputtering layers of manipulated sound.
