Every now and then a band comes along to remind that if you’re looking for it to make sense, sometimes you’re the one with the problem. Granted, Austin’s ST 37 are passed the 30-year mark in offering said reminder, so I don’t necessarily know if “comes along” is the right phrase so much as “was already there,” but you get the point.

With an amalgam of freaked-out noisy punk and even more freaked-out psychedelic freakouts, improv-style and otherwise — there’s time for a little bit of everything in the 14-minute “KBDP,” nestled into side C of the 2LP as it is, let alone anything else in the record’s total 12 tracks/79 minutes — the vibe swings way, way open quickly as the jangly “War Fever” fuzz-grooves its way into a wash with a swath of voices and a deceptively playful bouncing rhythm, some sax, and echoing noise, eerie whispers and pretty much whatever else you want to hear in it. From there, it’s headfirst into the swirling made-up-on-the-spot “Shaper of Worlds” and the massive, organ-led eight-minute linear build of the Elegant Doormats cover “Grey Area,” before another cover, this one of The Vast Majority‘s “Hollywood Cemetery,” adds early-punk fervor to the proceedings.

The grounding effect of that cover, plenty swirling though it is, isn’t to be understated. It’s a kind of structural variety throughout ST 37 that speaks to the narrative circumstance of the album’s making, with recordings begun in 2015 and finished last year after a month-long tour with Japanese weirdo-legends Acid Mothers Temple. Not that ST 37were exactly hurting for doing-whatever-the-hell-they-want anyway, but there’s an inspired spark behind the drifting rhythm and soaking wet overlaid lead guitar on “Shadesty,” as well as the manic laughter peppered into the later “Rooster Feather Paycheck,” and the tension of the repetitions in “Boss” that give way to the sleepy nine-minute improv “Inward, Please” speak to a will to throw the listener off-course that makes ST 37 both a challenge and an enjoyable listening experience.

In its makeup as well as its runtime, in the horror-surf harmonica of “Snootle y Choobs,” in the maybe-everything’s-backwards “Vengeance of Faces” and the space-consuming resolve of closer “Informed by Death,” there’s a refusal on the part of ST 37 to compromise with itself, and that gives it both an overarching sincerity of expression and a sheen of hypercool that’s an immediate weedout for lighter-weight heads. Interspersed with some live footage of the band in its final minute — you can see founding bassist Scott Telles in the midst of all that churning fluidity — it’s a fitting-enough representation for the track, though as noted above, that’s only the beginning of what the album soon unfurls.

Super Secret Records proudly presents the new ST 37 double album (following up last year’s 12″ split with Acid Mothers Temple on our subsidiary label Self Sabotage Records).

After playing 30 shows in 31 days all over the US and Canada with Acid Mothers Temple in 2015, ST 37 felt an immediate need to decamp for Ohm Studios to capture some shit-hot lightning in a bottle with Chico Jones at the helm in an attempt to translate the incredible energy that was exchanged between these two psychedelic juggernauts as they battled their way across North America. It seemed as if the Japanese sonic wizards and the Texas space rockers were rubbing off on each other: AMT guitarist Makoto Kawabata guested live several times with ST 37 on the Twin Peaks cover “Just You” and the bands made immediate plans to issue a TP-themed split 12″ 45 with AMT’s version of “Sycamore Trees” (Self Sabotage Records SS-08); AMT bassist Atsushi Tsuyama found himself channeling ST 37 bassist Scott Telles’s lyrics onstage at the Mercury Lounge in Mahattan; and Telles suddenly started adopting Mitsuru Tabata’s idiosyncratic vocal style.

Thus: a band changed translates this newfound energy into a brand new double LP and CD, three years in the making from the initial basic tracks at Ohm through more sessions with Evan Kleinecke at 5th St. Studios to numerous efforts at various band members’ home studios. The new eponymously-titled record is in effect both current (new songs like War Fever, Boss and Shadesty) and timeless, as the band explores its roots with tracks like Houston punk chestnut Hollywood Cemetery and the old Elegant Doormats classic Grey Area.

Austin space/psych institution ST 37 celebrated its 30th anniversary last year and follows it up with a double-length state of the union address. Longtime leaders Joel Crutcher (guitar), Lisa Cameron (drums), and Scott Telles (bass/vox), joined by axe wielders Bobby Baker and Matt Turner and electronics gremlin Bob Bechtol, reach a new peak. “KBDP” and a remake of “Grey Area” from Telles’ pre-ST band Elegant Doormats dive into a psychedelic sea, riding waves of pedal-damaged guitars and oscillator atmosphere into the deepest trench. The snarling “Boss” and blasting “Hollywood Cemetery,” plucked from the obscure catalog of Telles’ old Houston hardcore band Vast Majority, hit an opposite note, rocking hard enough to dispel Mary Jane’s thickest clouds. “Shadesty” and redos of old standards “Snootle y Choobs,” featuring harmonicat Walter Daniel, and “Rooster Feather Paycheck” find the median, balancing black-light tripping with brute force. Few bands boast a vision as clear as that demonstrated by Suspirians on their debut. Released in 2014, the Austin trio’s vibrant blend of post-punk onslaught and cosmic psychedelia sounded fully formed. Which makes the quantum progression of sophomore LP Ti Bon Ange all the more noteworthy.

“We didn’t have time to think about it too much,” says singer/guitarist Marisa Pool. “We had the opportunity to go into the studio via Super Secret, and we felt an urgency to do it quickly. Looking back, I don’t know why. [Maybe] because it had already been over a year since we put out the first record.

“So we took the material and worked it. We were really open to experimenting and seeing what we could do with what we had. We didn’t overthink it. We spent a lot of time shaping it, but we also just had fun with it – like a piece of art.”

Bassist/keyboardist Stephanie Demopulos pinpoints another reason for the exponential growth.

“We were already writing songs in a different direction, but we did replace a band member, which changed a lot of stuff.”

She’s referring to the exit of original drummer Anna Lamphear, off to study law, and the addition of veteran Austin drummer Lisa Cameron, who brought a new edge to the threepiece.

“One thing I’ve noticed is that we’ve gone more into improv, experimental tinges,” says Cameron, whose powerhouse résumé includes membership in roots blowout Brave Combo, indie rock first-wavers Glass Eye, and Lone Star legends Roky Erickson & the Aliens – not to mention a long-running stint with homegrown psych pioneers ST 37. “I think I’m encouraging them somehow even though they were already there. “We have somehow developed this uncanny sense of being able to evoke different sounds without having to actually play like that person,” she continues. “Like just a little tinge of this or that is enough to remind people of the Butthole Surfers or Neil Young or Siouxsie Sioux. There’s an influence of surf. I even hear girl groups, the Ronettes or the Shangri-Las, in there. We’re not trying to sound like those people. It’s just part of our natural diet.”

Unsurprisingly, for a band that gives interviews en masse, Suspirians credit their sophomore triumph to tight chemistry.

“Stephanie and I have been playing together for years,” says Pool. “Once we started playing with Lisa, that just expanded the vision and it went on its natural path. It just keeps changing to something better, hopefully.”

Austin Jukebox was started with the idea of bridging multiple genre gaps by putting vastly musically different bands together on one stage with one large headlining act topping the bill. In many cases, the headlining act has been a “no way!” group, either because this is their first show together in years or they usually play significantly larger venues. To help advance everyone’s discovery of new genres and bands at these events, the cover has always remained $5. And just to sweeten the deal even more, we’ve always been adamant to keep Austin Jukebox at Beerland, a venue that has provided us much support, encouragement, and advice over the years and supplies a fantastic intimacy with a capacity of about 200 people.

The whole world is waiting impatiently for the return of Twin Peaks later this month on Showtime. The original run of Twin Peaks on ABC in 1990 and 1991 is one of the pivotal junctures of television history, as the surrealist master David Lynch and his co-consipirator Mark Frost brought new levels of atmosphere and lust to the normally PG-rated confines of network TV, baffling and exasperating audiences with an occult-laced, nightmarish gee-whiz take on the Pacific Northwest that crossed Lynch’s prior hit Blue Velvet with an FBI murder mystery.

After nearly three decades, Lynch is reviving the show, and a certain group of Japanese freaks has taken notice. On May 12, in plenty of time for the premiere of the reboot on May 21, Self Sabotage Records is releasing a split 12-inch with Acid Mothers Temple and The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. from Japan and ST 37 from Texas, U.S.A. both contributing covers of Angelo Badalamenti/Lynch songs from the original run of Twin Peaks. Acid Mothers Temple is covering “Sycamore Trees,” a song sung by Jimmy Scott (as the singer at the Black Lodge) in the final episode of Season 2, and ST 37 is contributing a cover of “Just You,” which appears in the second episode of Season 2.
 

 
The “Just You” scene is one of the more interesting in the first half of season 2. The song itself has a completely otherworldly vocal quality, somewhat like “In Heaven” from Lynch’s masterpiece Eraserhead. In the scene James (played by James Marshall) sings the song in the Haywards’ living room, during which Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle) realizes that she is in danger of losing James to Laura Palmer’s cousin Maddie (played, like Laura Palmer herself, by Sheryl Lee). I like the song (and the scene), but a LOT of people find the whole thing cringeworthy. It’s definitely up there in the Lynch pantheon of weird/awesome scenes.

ST 37 is psych/space rock band that was formed in 1987 in Austin, Texas. They’ve put out more than a dozen albums since 1989, the most recent of which is 2014’s I’m Not Good. Describing Acid Mothers Temple is a challenge: It’s the main band of a number of psych rock offshoots founded by guitar legend Kawabata Makoto, who sought to create “extreme trip music” influenced by prog rock and krautrock. Befitting a band that is making trippy jam albums somewhat à la Sun Ra, their (often 2-LP) albums have wordy, spacy titles like The Penultimate Galactic Bordello Also the World You Made or Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars.

Most of AMT’s compositions are longer than 10 minutes—often 15 or 20 minutes—which is a good reason to be happy that the Twin Peaks split is a 12-inch and not a 7-inch…..

These shows are built around an eclectic variety, usually bringing in a legendary act; they’ve previously featured acts like James Chance and The Cherubs.
