One of the most inventive bands to emerge from Australia in the 1990s, the Moles get a new lease on life in 2018 with various lineups, searing new tunes destined for your autumn/winter playlists.

Code Word is the new double LP from the Moles. The record arrives 19 October via Super Secret Records and may be pre-ordered here. The record is the band’s first 2016’s Tonight’s Music. This time out, band leader Richard Davies assembled multiple versions of the band from a variety of locations including Detroit, New York City, Austin, Texas, Mexico City, Easthampton, and Somerville. The result is a collection that’s right in tune with classic Moles sounds while carrying the group right to the edge of 2019.

The opening “Moon in the Daytime” is a rollicking pop-rock effort that imagines a hybrid of the Byrds and Guided By Voices (Davies collaborated with GBV’s Robert Pollard in 2009 under the moniker Cosmos.) Meanwhile, “Delicate” continues the psych/lo-fi/psychedelic aesthetic with a driving enthusiasm that imagines the Who having gone punk circa 1976 rather than evolving into an increasingly reflective and mature unit. “Cheaper to Keep Her” could be an obscure single by some forgotten UK act in the flavor of the Bevis Frond. Of course, those are touchstones, and the record is nothing less than what stalwarts would expect from the Moles: A full-on aural assault that’s tuneful, adventurous and filled with wild, wild imaginings.

In case anyone doubted Davies and his roots, a spot-on cover of Slade’s “Gubuy T’ Jane” reminds us that Noddy Holder and friends were as instrumental to glams rise as Bowie, Bolan or Sparks. You can hear further evidence of Davies’ particular genius in the trippy “Ancestors”, the delightfully strange “After May” and the titular piece which, once more, makes a case for further exploration of the missing links between indie and progressive rock.

Formed in Sydney, Australia in 1990, the group released an EP and one full-length, moving to New York, London, before unraveling in 1993. One more LP followed before Davies put the band to bed in 1996, only to reignite the flames of inspiration some 22 years after the debut utterance.

In the end, Code Word is a perfect reminder that Davies and the Moles (regardless of iteration) are as innovative as they are familiar, as sweet as they can be biting, as tuneful as they can be filled with abandon. This collection seems destined to garner the Moles a new group of devoted followers and pique the interest of those who have been there from the start.

Austin trio Evil Triplet is a space rock behemoth comprised of Steve March (guitar/vocals) Kirk Laktas (drums) and Joe Volpi (bass). TEXAS-BASED FOLK ARTIST LITTLE MAZARN USES PROPERTIES OF A SPACE TO ADD TO THE STORY OF “MY LOVE IS ALL AROUND YOU”.

Little Mazarn is the stage name for Lindsey Verrill. Her self-titled 2017 album (out via Self Sabotage Records, a division of Super Secret Records) features the song “My Love Is All Around You”. The new accompanying video, which arrives ahead of a series of summer dates, finds the singer performing this achy, haunting number in an abandoned space chosen for its natural reverb. Joining her sparse banjo lines and singular vocals is Jeff Johnston’s chill-inducing bowed saw.

The song is a loving nod to the purity of true Americana music and is unimpeded by gimmicks or irony. The live outdoor performance captures the musicians finding the nuance of the sounds and space together. It is an act of love and of intimacy that we are privileged to witness. It provides us with some sense of hope and that what Verrill herself calls “the garbage that is humanity” might still be saved.

“I am fascinated with found reverb and go on exploratory hikes in storm drains and canals looking for perfect natural reverb,” Verrill says. “Ask anyone in Austin about our sewer shows. I found this beauty of a culvert behind one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants. There’s a storm tunnel that runs right under my house, and maybe someday I’ll make a huge reverb chamber out of it with a trap door from the house.”

Named after a river in Arkansas, Little Mazarn bridges the distance between slowcore, gospel, and Appalachian folk.

Terminal Mind

BETWEEN 1978 AND 1981, TERMINAL MIND HELPED SHAPE THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN PUNK ROCK AND NEW COMPILATION SUGGESTS THE GROUP IS STILL AT THE CUTTING EDGE.

Formed in 1978, in the first blast of Texas punk, Terminal Mind sounds remarkably fresh and prescient today, more than three decades since the group splintered in the heat of the Lone Star sun. In its short, happy life, Terminal Mind recorded a series of catchy but aggressive songs that earned the group opening slots with Iggy Pop and drew comparisons to John Cale, Wire and Pere Ubu. A new collection, Recordings, features a rare four-song seven-inch single as well as previously unreleased studio ventures and material previously heard on the underground classic Live at Raul’s.

Listening to the clang and clamor of “Zombieland”, one can hear the skeleton of R.E.M. and other bands that crawled from the Athens scene. In “Sense of Rhythm” one can detect influences similar to the unsung Kansas punks the Embarrassment, a burst of energy that’s somewhere between the garage and the Silver Factory. “Black” predicts much of Steve Albini’s bleakest sonic explorations while casting an ear to Manchester and the sounds of Joy Division and its ilk.

The group initially existed as a trio with Steve Marsh joining brothers Doug and Greg Murray, then added synthesizer maestro Jack Crow. Across the years, Marsh would be involved in Miracle Room and Evil Triplet while Doug Murray would become a member of the Skunks and his brother spent time with the Big Boys. (Crow passed in 1984.)

This lovingly remastered collection, Recordings is available as LP, CD and digital download via Sonic Surgery Records on 19 January and may be ordered here.
