Wow, Aussie expat Richard Davies (who’s been living in Massachusetts for years) is back with a new Moles record.  The Moles fabulous debut, Untune the Sky was a revelation for me when I heard it back in the mid-90’s as was his next project, the great Cardinal (with Eric Matthews). This time he’s back with a record as varied and disparate as anything he’s ever done. However despite having several different Moles lines up (Austin, NYC, Detroit, Mexico City and two in Massachusetts, Somerville and Easthampton, for all of the different lineups that recorded the record). Honestly, he doesn’t sound like he’s lost a step as the songs are rough and nimble, bumping up against each other  and then waltzing down the aisle (don’t mind if I do).  Opening cut “Moon in the Daytime” chugs along with some real panache while “Delicate,” despite its title, shows a more garagey side of the band with a rawer sound and “Queen Anne” is as off-kilter as anything Davies has ever done (as is the title track). Elsewhere don’t miss the uke-soaked “Riptide” or the odd, choppier “Punk On All Four Tracks” and the Soft Boys-esque “Prison Girls” as well.  There’s even a song called “Richard Davies 6.0”) and that final song “Gudbuy T’ Jane” which is just awesome. I’m not sure if Davies has been working on these songs since the last Moles record or if he whipped this batch in the past year or so but it’s a mostly terrific batch of songs birthed as only they could be by their enigmatic creator. Plax- CLEAN FEELING (SUPER SECRET RECORDS)

Coming out on the Super Secret label (Austin, TX) I had a feeling this’d be some gnarly, over the top stuff and it certainly is. Apparently the band is a supergroup of sorts (I hope someone thinks up another word for a supergroup someday…..I’m gonna head down to the lab and work on it myself) and have been together a little over a year.  The solid lineup is Victor from Skeleton and Nosferatu, Michael and Marley from OBN IIIs (Marley is also in Sweet Talk), Chris from Spray Paint and Dikes of Holland and not sure if these four were born in the same hospital at the same time or not but they seem like they’ve been playing together longer than Jagger n’ Richards (Charlie too, can’t leave out Charlie). The songs are what matter here and Clean Feeling is full of the kinda music meant to be played while driving while blindfolded, chasing the cat around the house with the chain saw or driving a golf cart off a cliff. You know you’re gonna get hurt real bad (or worse) so you might as well have fun while doing it. Cut like “Boring Story,” “In a Web,” “Mistake” and “What a Waste” seem to hit that sweet spot right where Solger, the Pagans and the Germs all collide Oh, also vocalist Victor seems like the kinda guy you don’t want to have to deliver any bad news too (and if you do have to make sure you’re inside of a car (and he’s on the outside) so you can put the pedal to the metal and scram before he loses his shit). Dagger Zine Review of Quin Galavis’ The Battery Line

Quin Galavis- THE BATTERY LINE (SUPER SECRET RECORDS)

In which the Austin musician (and member of The Dead Space) comes back quickly, hot on the heels of his 2016 double album My Life in Steel and Concrete (I still need to hear his 2011 solo debut Should Have Known). This record is poppier and more song-oriented record as My Life In was much darker and more experimental…not that The Battery Line isn’t dark at times, it certainly has its moments, but overall its more of a rock/pop record “Garden Wall” is a perfect opener, showing that the guy means business with a blast of raucous guitars (at first I thought Galavis played everything but no, he’s got a band on the record) while “No Return” shows that he might have been listening to some of that folk rock that was coming out of Los Angeles in the late 60’s (maybe The Byrds or Love). It’s obvious that the guy’s got a big musical palette and wants to expand and expound. The moody “Paul’s Phone is Dead” seems to take a page or two out of the Velvet Underground songbook while “Bleed With Me” is a low-key chamber pop number and definitely one of Galavis’ best songs yet. Side two kicks off with the 90’s alt pop of “Faces in the Crowd” (dig those backing vocals) while “Question’ has a sweet little groove to it that you want to play all day and “Any Head” spits and kicks like the best melodic garage punk does. From where I’m standing (actually sitting) I see a guy like Galavis with ideas bursting in his head that need to get out. Suspirians- TI BON ANGE (SUPER SECRET RECORDS)

A trio of ladies, Marisa, Stephanie and Lisa (for the record, drummer Lisa is Lisa Cameron has played with both Roky Erickson and ST37 as well), who call Austin, TX home. They offer up this 7-song (6 listed but there’s a hidden track and it totals 40 minutes) record, their sophomore effort, that will rearrange your thinkin’ but good. And if they took their name from that horror flick Suspiria well, they’re now making me rethink my whole existence. From song number one, “Fortune Spider” it’s dark, heavy and a bit mysterious too (again, you’ve gotta see that movie) and I was initially reminded of the holy/unholy swill created by masters like Sonic Youth and the Butthole Surfers but they really knock it out of the park on menacing monsters like “Nocturne” and “Moonwave.” On the other side of the record (we in the industry like to call it side B) “Black Holes” grunts n’ groans and never really lets up as it does until the side of the record ends.
