Again, thank you to everyone who came out to Austin Jukebox 7 tonight (and yesterday)! The overwhelming support, appreciation, and kindness you all have expressed to us these last few days makes all the hard work that goes into making these shows reality more than worth it.

Austin Jukebox 7 is our first time to do a double header, back-to-back event. This allows us to bring you TWICE the mix of great bands each quarter! And tonight the greatness was in no short supply – local noise-rock band Coma in Algiers got things started with a near sold out crowd while local blues punk group The Crack Pipes, playing for the first time in a while, debuted some new material and got everyone pumped for the main event. We welcomed Pere Ubu back to Austin (their only US show for 2017 and their first time back in Austin in around 20 years!) to thunderous applause and singing along from an incredibly enthusiastic crowd. Even today, 40-plus years after forming in Cleveland, no one sounds like Pere Ubu.

Its organic blend of arty noise and Midwestern garage rock grew out of Rocket From the Tombs, a legendary proto-punk band that contributed songs and band members to Pere Ubu and which revived with original members early in the new millennium. The two groups rarely play in close proximity, with this unique double-header last seen in 2003. Both will concentrate on the songs performed in their original incarnations – an experience dubbed the Coed Jail Tour.

Sharing repertoire (“Life Stinks,” “30 Seconds Over Tokyo,” “Final Solution”) and personnel (frontman Dave Thomas, guitarist Gary Siperko, drummer Steve Mehlman), the lines between the two acts could blur, but that’s not the case.

“I can keep them separate because each one has a very specific function in my mind,” says Thomas from London. “In practical terms, Pere Ubu is my main band. Unfortunately Rocket has always had to take second fiddle, often because it’s more difficult to get the people together. It’s not to say that I don’t like doing Rocket as much. Rocket is exciting, because it makes no pretense other than to be a brutal rock experience, and it’s fun to do.

“It’s also fun to not do it, which is why Pere Ubu’s had the evolutionary curve that it’s had.”

That evolution’s kept Ubu constantly pushing its sound forward, which makes a show dedicated to the past a surprise.

“It used to be we would record an album, tour it, then come home and sit there for two more years doing nothing while we recorded a new album,” says Thomas. “In the last number of years, it’s come to be a useful tool [to do shows] like Coed Jail. We all keep working, keep in touch with each other.

“Over the last year we’ve been working on a new album. It’s coming out in the fall and will be called 20 Years in a Montana Missile Silo, then that’ll be the end of Coed Jail for a period. Unless somebody comes along and says, ‘Here’s $30,000 if you do “Final Solution.”’ We have our principles, but hell, $30,000, I’ll do it!”

First, a huge thank you to everyone who made it out for part one of Austin Jukebox #7! None of what we do would be possible without your support and encouragement.

Austin Jukebox was started with the idea of bridging multiple genre gaps by putting vastly musically different bands together on one stage with one large headlining act topping the bill. In many cases, the headlining act has been a “no way!” group, either because this is their first show together in years or they usually play significantly larger venues. To help advance everyone’s discovery of new genres and bands at these events, the cover has always remained $5. And just to sweeten the deal even more, we’ve always been adamant to keep Austin Jukebox at Beerland, a venue that has provided us much support, encouragement, and advice over the years and supplies a fantastic intimacy with a capacity of about 200 people.

If you haven’t been paying close attention to the Austin Jukebox series, then you haven’t been paying close attention to Austin’s music scene. These shows are built around an eclectic variety, usually bringing in a legendary act; they’ve previously featured acts like James Chance and The Cherubs. But, for my two cents, I love how the bills feature some variety, so you’ll get a legend, but the acts are fleshed out with different styles and tastes…you get a little bit of everything.
