New Berlin began as a recording experiment in South Texas in 2015. The first live performances were as a one-man band using drum machines, looping effects and guitars. Over the course of 2015, various line-ups began to form around the songs and perform live. The rotating cast eventually solidified into a three piece consisting of Michael Flanagan on guitar and vocals, Gustavo Martinez on bass, and Andrew Richardson on drums. This line-up toured around the United States twice, supporting two singles that were released through Austin’s Super Secret Records.
The group produced recordings in Edinburg, TX, that were released on the B-side of an album titled Basic Function. The A-side contains recordings made in 2015 before the band had come together. Released through Super Secret Records in the USA and Erste Theke Tontrager in Europe, Basic Function presents a history of New Berlin, from its beginnings as a living room recording experiment to its first attempts at working in a studio, and finally as a full-fledged band, road-worn by performances throughout the United States.
After releasing Basic Function, New Berlin toured the Mid-West and East Coast during the Summer of 2017, this time with Sebastian Garcia behind the drum set. A new single is set for release through Italy’s Goodbye Boozy Records, and the band is preparing for a string of performances that will see them in Europe during the Summer of 2018.
